President Obama’s new budget proposal focuses on the importance of energy to the economy and the environment, as outlined today by the Office of Management and Budget in an article called Creating the Clean Energy of Tomorrow and Protecting the Environment. “We now face a make-or-break moment for the middle class and those trying to reach it. After decades of eroding middle-class security as those at the very top saw their incomes rise as never before and after a historic recession that plunged our economy into a crisis from which we are still fighting to recover, it is time to construct an economy that is built to last.”
The first priority mentioned in the budget outline is supporting American leadership in clean energy, a critical investment for the future of our economy. “Moving toward a clean energy economy will improve the air we breathe and the water we drink and enhance our energy security by reducing dependence on oil… Just as important, ensuring that the Nation leads the world in the clean energy economy is an economic imperative.”
Following the focus on developing clean energy sources, the President addressed energy efficiency, recognizing the importance of not only supply in the energy market, but also demand. “The President’s Advanced Manufacturing Partnership invests in a national effort to develop and commercialize emerging technologies that will create high quality manufacturing jobs and enhance our global competitiveness.” Such emerging technologies that will enhance our global competitiveness include not only energy efficiency at an industrial level, but also for residential consumers empowered to reduce energy use in their homes through effective customer engagement platforms.
The remainder of the budget addresses a variety of concerns related to the energy industry, including climate change, the environment, public health, and sustainable development. Overall, the budget represents a comprehensive approach to creating long term growth in the economy based on encouraging innovation, supporting education, and protecting essential resources. “The Budget targets scarce federal resources to the areas critical to growing the economy and restoring middle-class security: education and skills for American workers, innovation and manufacturing, clean energy, and infrastructure.”
