Christian Grey may have an impressive tie collection, billions of dollars, and one hell of a story to tell — but we’d like to challenge E.L. James’ best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey and make Grey a bit more, well, green. From the novel, to fan pages, articles and now a film plastering big screens nationwide, we’d like to point out that there are people who will flock to the box office, and those who will not.
Why? Different people react to different things. Some people like the thrill of a taboo romance novel, some like saving money while others like saving energy (sometimes in coordination). Others might need something more, something different. Because each of us has our own unique “shade of green.”
Let’s leave our imaginations behind here, and start thinking about energy savings — for us at Simple Energy, it’s just as alluring as James’ scenes between Anastasia and Christian (OK, just bare with us here…). There are different kinds of energy savers, and no matter what shade of green you are, there is something we can all do to save more energy.
We get it – sometimes utility companies can make things a bit difficult, handcuffed if you will (see what we did there?), but they’re catching up. Have faith!
James’ mission may have been to attract more readers, but ours is to empower customers to save energy — to find their shade of green. Our engagement platform incentivizes the reduction of energy savings through education and awareness, but also, through different shades. You could be an energy saver who loves Starbucks or a parent trying to teach their kids how to conserve, our rewards span across all shades. Who doesn’t love a free cup of coffee for saving energy? Caffeine can really open up your eyes to new things.
In fact, we found that between 4 – 6.8% of customers reduce their annual energy consumption while 80% say they have a better understanding of their household energy use by using our engagement platform.
Milton Hydro, one of our partners, is a great example. They put together a Community Energy Challenge that motivates utility customers through community involvement. This engagement pays back, and awards money to local schools as an incentive for other utility customers to reduce their household energy usage.
In turn, schools are encouraged to educate and motivate parents, students and teachers to save the most energy in their homes, with the help of the Simple Energy engagement platform.
Another example is our partner Horizon Utilities. They put together a “Take Charge, Save Energy, Earn Rewards” program, which grants residential customers with “AIR MILES ® reward miles” for consecutive weeks in which their household energy consumption is lower than past weeks with similar outside temperatures.
How do you know your true shade? It could be gamification, targeted and personalized messaging, social sharing or geeking out over some analytical data. Just remember, there is no one, universal way to save energy. No matter your true shade there is a fun, easy way to save energy — kinky behavior optional, but strongly encouraged.
